Abstract

In this paper, I make two assertions: (1) there is no universal agreement on the definition of “humanity” —even if it is assumed to be a “truth universally acknowledged”; (2) the notions of “humanity” often cited as the hallmark of civilization and culture stem from erroneous conceptions of the innateness of humanity.
