 EURS 2025 Keynote Speaker:

 Dr. Grant Kemp
Research Partner (Vice-President Research and Innovation)
 University of Alberta

"Exploring Your Personal Path of Discovery: Navigating the Winding Maze of Thorny Rose Bushes of Research and Innovation"

Dr. Grant Kemp grew up in Edmonton and completed his BSc (2007) and PhD (2013) in Biochemistry at the University of Alberta. His interest in research was sparked during high school biology, where he was introduced to the concept of metabolism. He became fascinated by the complexity of metabolic networks and the intricate balance of enzymes and transporters that create, store, and consume energy. This curiosity evolved into a desire to understand how proteins, particularly membrane proteins, function.

Following his PhD, Dr. Kemp moved to Stockholm, Sweden, where he spent nearly a decade as a Postdoctoral Researcher and later as a Staff Scientist at Stockholm University. His research there focused on protein folding and the assembly of bioenergetic membrane protein complexes.

Currently, Dr. Kemp works as a Research Partner at the University of Alberta, supporting faculty members in developing compelling grant applications that help bring their research ideas to life. Throughout his scientific career, he has consistently volunteered his time to support students, postdocs, and fellow researchers in navigating academic and administrative challenges. Through his involvement in student associations and Early Career Researcher (ECR) organizations, he was eventually elected Chair of the National Junior Faculty of Sweden, representing early-career researchers at the university, national, and European levels.

Dr. Kemp finds the greatest satisfaction in strengthening team performance, especially through mentoring students and postdocs, both academically and by providing constructive technical feedback on their experiments.
