Call for Production Editors – ISTL Feb 2026

2026-02-27

Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship is an open access journal published by the Science and Technology Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries and hosted by the University of Alberta Libraries. We are recruiting 2-3 production editors (volunteer, part-time position) for our editorial board. The appointments will be for a three-year term, with the chance for renewal. Optimally, new production editors would begin to handle editorial duties in April/May 2026. Training and support will be provided. This is a great opportunity to get experience in open access publishing.

About ISTL: ISTL publishes substantive material of interest to science and technology librarians and information specialists. It serves as a vehicle to share details of successful programs, background information, and opinions on topics of current interest, and to publish peer-reviewed papers, including case studies, practical applications, theoretical essays, and research papers relevant to the functions and operations of science and technology libraries in all settings. Through its columns ISTL also publishes webliographies, reviews, opinions, and best practices. ISTL has been committed to open access, free to read and free to publish, since 1991. ISTL is indexed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and Scopus.

Production Editor Core Responsibilities
  • Prepare manuscripts with markups for production into HTML and PDF galleys.
  • Ensure consistency and clarity across all published content including metadata, copyright clearances, citation formatting, and references.

Additional responsibilities

  • Serve on the editorial board.
  • Provide guidance in running the journal.
Application

Successful candidates will have excellent communication and technology skills. A record of research publications in refereed journals is preferred. Previous editing experience is desirable. Experience working with the Open Journal Systems (OJS) online publication system is a plus, but not necessary.

We value and encourage new and diverse perspectives for our editorial board, as our journal is only as good as the breadth of voices who feel welcome to participate in our scholarly conversation. Editorial board membership is an excellent way to provide professional service to the ACRL Science and Technology Section and to the STEM librarian community, as well as add to your service record for tenure and promotion.
