Naturalistic Interventions to Support Development of Emerging Literacy Skills in Daycare: Challenges and Facilitators

Abstract

Naturalistic interventions, such as activity-based interventions (ABI), use play and daily activities to support development of skills in young children. This article documents the challenges and facilitators encountered by four daycare educators trained and coached to implement ABI to support development of literacy skills. The main challenges identified were lack of time, management of socioemotional issues, and changes to groups of children. Facilitators include physical accommodations and children’s interests. This article highlights the importance of offering a wide range of literacy materials accessible to children.

Colombe Lemire détient un doctorat en psychoéducation et travaille comme professeure à l'Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) au Canada Département de psychoéducation. Ses activités de recherche portent sur la mise en œuvre de pratiques d'intervention naturaliste pour soutenir le développement des jeunes enfants à risque, avec ou sans handicap. Ses intérêts de recherche incluent également la validation psychométrique d'outils d'évaluation authentiques. Elle possède une vaste expérience professionnelle en intervention précoce principalement en santé et services sociaux au Canada.
