The MPEG-7 Initiative for Multimedia Content Description

Abstract

Digital imaging technologies are producing large collections of networked images and are creating an increasing need for additional types of descriptive mechanisms for these collections. Among the communities addressing this need is the MPEG-7 initiative, focusing on content description for multimedia. this paper describes MPEG-7, its context and objectives, its constituencies and methods.
