Kairos, Information Literacy and Praxis: Critical Theory and Critical Practice in LIS and Academic Librarianship

Abstract

Kairos involves both an understanding of the
sociohistorically-informed present and a recognition of
present necessities. Examining the state of
information literacy scholarship, we argue we are
within a kairotic moment where LIS scholars and
librarians need to merge critical theories and critical
practices to create a critical praxis of librarianship.

Le Kairos implique à la fois une compréhension du
présent tel qu’il est façonné sociohistoriquement et
une reconnaissance des nécessités actuelles. Suite à
notre examen de l’état de la recherche sur la
compétence informationnelle, nous avançons que
nous sommes arrivés à un kairos où les chercheurs
en sciences de l’information et les bibliothécaires
vont devoir fusionner les théories critiques et les
pratiques critiques pour créer une pratique critique de
la bibliothéconomie.
