SINCERITY: A New Bilingual Search engine for Image Retrieval in a Bilingual Context

Abstract

This poster presents a research project that aims to
develop an interface model for image retrieval
(SINCERITY) in a bilingual (French and English)
context, that is, when the query language differs from
the indexing language. This poster will summarize the
results of the first and second phases of the project
and will present the preliminary results of the user
testing. Once fully developed, SINCERITY is intended
to be an innovative tool for image searchers who are
looking for ordinary images. The main contribution of
this project lies in bridging a gap for unilingual image
searchers. The bilingual search interface will
constitute a definite benefit for image searchers
unfamiliar with more than one language, by giving
them user-friendly access to visual resources.

Cette affiche présente un projet de recherche qui vise
à développer un modèle d’interface pour la recherche
d’image (SINCERITY) dans un contexte bilingue
(français et anglais), c’est-à-dire quand le langage de
requête diffère de la langue d’indexation. Cette
affiche résumera les résultats des première et
deuxième phases du projet et présentera les résultats
préliminaires des essais par l’utilisateur. Une fois
pleinement développé, SINCERITY entend devenir un
outil innovant pour les chercheurs d’image qui sont à
la recherche d’images ordinaires. La contribution
principale de ce projet est de combler une lacune
pour les chercheurs unilingues. L’interface de
recherche bilingue constitue un avantage certain pour
les chercheurs qui ne sont familiers qu’avec une
seule langue, en leur donnant un accès convivial aux
ressources visuelles.
