Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • Author and all co-authors agree to the Copyright Notice as part of the submission process.

Author Guidelines

Thank you for considering Journal of Practical Nurse Education and Practice.

The Journal of Practical Nurse Education and Practice accepts manuscripts of any length that address original research, original perspectives, knowledge synthesis studies, case studies, policy analysis, as well as book reviews or responses to articles previously published.

The journal is open-access and does not charge a publication fee. All works are published under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial 4.0 International (CC-BY-NC 4.0) license. Please review our Copyright Notice.

Manuscripts will be given an initial assessment by the Editor. Following, suitable manuscripts undergo double-blind peer review.

Preparing your manuscript for submission

Papers should be submitted free from materials that identify authors (in references, author names should be replaced with [AUTHOR]). Manuscripts should include the following elements:

  • On the cover page of your submission, include:
    • Title
    • Authors and institutional affiliations where research was conducted
    • Name of the corresponding author, along with contact details (name/phone)
  • Beginning on the second page of your submission (separate from author details), include:
    • Title
    • Abstract (100-150 words, include background, methods, results, conclusions)
    • Keywords (3-6)
    • Manuscript text. For original research, please include:
      • Introduction
      • Literature review
      • Methodology and Methods
      • Results
      • Discussion
    • Acknowledgements
    • All figures and appendices, as appropriate.
    • Citations, level of headings, references in APA format. See guidelines https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines 

As an online journal, Journal of Practical Nurse Education and Practice has the capability of incorporating interactive media (audio, video, and links) into published works. Authors are responsible to ensure that all media are submitted as part of peer review. Contact JPNEP@norquest.ca to discuss your submission if you have non-standard media or media that may identify authors.

Authors submitting elements for which they do not hold copyright (e.g., images, videos), must obtain written permission to use the materials in advance of submission. Please submit written permissions to the Editor with your submission.

Preparing your manuscript for copy editing

Once your manuscript has been accepted for publication, you are expected to follow APA guidelines to prepare your article for copy editing. Use the following checklist as a guide as you prepare your manuscript for copy editing:

  • Check spellings for consistency with Canadian English.
  • Check the grammar to make sure your ideas are clear for readers. You can use free softwares such as grammarly for assistance.
  • Text has been reviewed for spelling/grammar by the author
  • Follow APA format for level of headings, line spacing, margins, citation principles, quotations, references and paragraph alignments. 
  • All references and in-text citations are properly formatted in APA style.

  • Final author draft is uploaded and biography provided on first page

Note that final author drafts that do not meet the requirements will be returned for further revision

Privacy Statement

The data collected from registered and non-registered users of this journal falls within the scope of the standard functioning of peer-reviewed journals. It includes information that makes communication possible for the editorial process; it is used to inform readers about the authorship and editing of content; it enables collecting aggregated data on readership behaviors, as well as tracking geopolitical and social elements of scholarly communication. 

This journal’s editorial team and its hosting service, the University of Alberta Libraries, use this data to guide their work in publishing and improving this journal. Data that will assist in developing this publishing platform may be shared with its developer Public Knowledge Project in an anonymized and aggregated form, with appropriate exceptions such as article metrics. The data will not be sold by this journal, the University of Alberta Libraries, or PKP nor will it be used for purposes other than those stated here. The authors published in this journal are responsible for the human subject data that figures in the research reported here. 

This website uses Google Analytics, a service which transmits website traffic data to Google servers in the United States. Google Analytics does not identify individual users or associate your IP address with any other data held by Google. This journal uses reports provided by Google Analytics to help us understand website traffic and webpage usage, and report on such usage to funding agencies, association members, and other agencies. Those involved in editing this journal seek to be compliant with industry standards for data privacy, including the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) provision for “data subject rights” that include (a) breach notification; (b) right of access; (c) the right to be forgotten; (d) data portability; and (e) privacy by design. The GDPR also allows for the recognition of “the public interest in the availability of the data,” which has a particular saliency for those involved in maintaining, with the greatest integrity possible, the public record of scholarly publishing.
