Sub-fields of Anthropology are represented by a trowel, skull, Kula Ring and phonetic spelling of UofA

This is the first issue of the long-awaited debut of COMPASS: The Student Anthropology Journal of Alberta. This feature includes undergraduate, MA, and PhD research of students at the University of Alberta, MacEwan University, and the University of British Columbia and spans archaeological, physical anthropology, and medical anthropology-related themes.

Two of the articles in this issue stem from award-winning research that was presented at the 25th Annual Richard Frucht Memorial Lecture Series and Student Conference (2016). Simpson (2017)  was awarded the Second Place Prize for the Undergraduate Podium Presentation Category, and Bishop (2017) was awarded the Second Place Prize for the Graduate Poster Presentation Category.

We would like to thank our staff and all submissions for their hard work and dedication allowing this issue to come to fruition.
