Abstract

With over thirty-five comic books as of 2016, Claire Bretécher is one of the most important French cartoonist of the past forty years. Women, and the way society teaches girls how to become women, are central to her books. Her study of the language and morals of her time led Roland Barthes to call her “the best sociologist in France” in 1976. Over the last decade, Bretécher has departed from the more conventional characters that she drew in the early 1970’s, with her characters becoming more diverse, active and in search of empowerment. In the following article, I will focus on the female characters in Bretécher’s latest books from a feminist perspective.
